Your resume is your professional personality. The more meticulously you take down your resume, more chances of success you will have. Every job has its own peculiarities and specific requirements.

While writing your resume, you should never follow ‘one-size- fits all’ approach. For example, if you have prepared a resume for business development manager for, say, a bank that particular resume may not be suitable for BDM in some other sector as every industry has its own peculiarities.

Following are a few success grabbing tips for how to prepare a befitting resume:

Know thyself

Most of the job aspirants for a job give a mechanical description of themselves. They do not even bother to have a sound understanding of what is being asked for.

The first task, we all should undergo is to know our skills- technical or non-technical and get convinced of your own self. Seriously, sit and think what are the skills and personality traits that you actually have that you have demonstrated in some situation or in some job, etc.

Take them down honestly, and then think of the potential skills and abilities that you can polish with the passage of time. Then take them down too. Now, compare your actual and potential skills and abilities with the skills and abilities required for the job you are preparing a resume for.

It will give you a convincing psychological edge and advantage over many of your competitors. But if you are deficient in one or more skill(s), try to make up the deficiency as soon as possible.

Conversely, one must know his strengths & limitations very candidly. Only then will you be able to prepare a convincing resume.

Writing a resume is just like carving out your sculpture. Chiseling out candid features of a sculpture depends upon your subtle research.

You should make research on two accounts;

  • knowing thoroughly the job requirements & the details of the industry you are applying for.
  • Go through the resume samples for that particular industry so that you could get a fair idea of how to write a perfect resume for yourself.

Personally, being a member of interview panels, I have noticed that most of the candidates/ aspirants do not know sufficiently either of the job they have applied for nor of the industry they intend to join.

Naturally, it makes a bad impression over the interviewers. So, it is highly suggested that before you start crafting your resume, surf through the internet and thoroughly research for the job requirements and industry too.

Put ‘first things first’

Relevance is the essence of your resume. Always, remember that the interviewer feels comfortable when you give relevant details of your skills, experience, achievements, etc. rather than giving irrelevant prosaic verbose details for out of the context matters.

It is not desirable. After prioritizing the most relevant accomplishments, skills, and experiences, you can give other achievements that could make sense or could be related in some way or the other, to your profile, proving you a better contender. Resume sections should also be in the order of strength.

Be Customized

Even the same job in different industries requires specialties. Every time you apply for the same job in different industries/sectors need is to tailor your resume accordingly. ‘Fits-for-all’ approach will not work at all.

You will have to be specific for the concerned sector. You are the best-suited candidate for the job. Do NOT ever make the mistake of sending one resume for all identical jobs. It will backfire ultimately.

Format Properly

Not only that your resume must be readable and brief but also properly formatted. Hiring managers seek to have an easy grasp of your resume. Give them a visual treat by organizing your resume in an intelligent way that could be scanned within a few seconds.

Use easy to read font with no grammatical errors and give proper logical headings. Guide his eyes by applying bold & italic typeface, highlight your accomplishments and relevant skills or experience by applying bullets.

Hobbies groom your Profession

Generally speaking, hobbies groom your personality. Be it gardening, running, blogging, reading, etc. But if you could make a link of your hobby with your professional grooming then it could give you an added advantage.

If you intend to apply for a job that requires research and development then reading books on your profession as a hobby could work as a booster. But mentioning hobby in the resume for the sake of a mention is something not recommended strongly.

So remember, your hobbies, if mentioned in the resume, should establish a link with your professional development.

Write Your Contact Details Conspicuously

Make sure that you give your correspondence address, phone number, professional E-Mail ID or your web like ‘LinkedIn profile or twitter handle’ at a conspicuous place in your resume for you are shortlisted then the concerned person would contact you without any hassle.

Divide into Sections

Arrange your resume into four important sections for experience, education, skills, and accomplishments (if any). Experience is to be mentioned in reverse chronological order, i.e. latest experience at first then the preceding one and so on and so forth.
